As Buteyko becomes established in the western world, more research into the
method will be undertaken. This research will progress down two paths - one
describing the effectiveness of the method, and one attempting to understand
why the method works.
New Zealand Research
Two studies are about to commence. One is an observational study, designed
along similar lines to the Brisbane trial. The second is a detailed study that will
track asthmatics over for a much longer period, and concentrate on establishing
the physiological changes the Buteyko Method makes, with intent of discovering
the reason the method works.
Australian Research
The Victorian Asthma Foundation has made AUD$20,000 available for research
into Buteyko. Studies are underway in underway in Melbourne, with the results
hopefully soon to be published.
Further Research
Trials are planned in the UK, with studies underway in Scotland, and will soon be
expanded. With the increase in numbers of Buteyko practitioners around the
world it seems likely that more research will be undertaken.
Buteyko Asthma Management’s Research Policy
Buteyko Asthma Management’s policy on research on the Buteyko Method is to
welcome it. Buteyko Asthma Management actively encourages and funds
further research. As we believe the methods works, and have a reasonable
understanding of why it is successful, research will only enhance acceptance of
the method.
